Writer-director Jonathan Newman is set to release his newest film, Swinging With The Finkels, into select North American theaters on August 26th. The movie, which will be distributed by Freestyle Releasing, tells the story of what happens to a married couple after the honeymoon ends and the spouses become bored with each other.

Swinging With The Finkels follows Ellie, played by Mandy Moore, and her bushand Alvin, portrayed by Martin Freeman, several years into their marriage. Their initial lust for each other has faded, and now they’re faced with day to day normality. Ellie and Alvin’s best friends, Janet, played by Melissa George, and Peter, played by Jonathan Silverman, recommend they spice up their relationship, despite their own marital problems.

After exploring various other options, Ellie recommends to Alvin they have a consensual affair. The two embark on finding who they feel will be the best couple to swing with. They eventually settle on who they feel will be the perfect couple, played by Angus Deayton and Daisy Beaumont.

The romantic comedy is being described as having a unique edge that anyone who’s ever been in a relationship will relate to.

It’s opened overseas to mediocre reviews and the trailer makes it out to be a harmless romantic comedy. All things considered, I’m looking forward to checking this one out at the end of the month.

There’s a scene in the film where you wear an open shirt with breast pumps attached to yourself – what was that like?

I came up with the idea for that scene where she wears the back-pack pumping system for breast milk while she’s doing the housework. We were all laughing and the guys on set couldn’t believe it. I was like: ‘Are you kidding? This is what women have to do.’ Mandy Moore said I was nuts for doing it. We got the machine from New York, where they’re pretty popular. If you’ve got to pump so you get a night’s sleep, that’s what you have to do.

What role has had the biggest impact on your career?

Playing Laura in In Treatment, which I got the Golden Globe nomination for last year. It’s a two-hander in a room and it’s rare to have that without being upstaged by the genre – it’s acting in its rawest form. The people who I wanted to notice my work did after that – maybe they didn’t before. I come from a small town in Australia and I couldn’t believe I was sitting at the awards ceremony with all these amazing actresses. I just remember whispering to Jessica Lang that she was such an inspiration to me.

What do you think perceptions of you as an actress are?

When you do different things like Grey’s Anatomy, then hit horror films like 30 Days Of Night and The Amityville Horror and then comedies, it’s difficult to know how people perceive you. I just love the variety and I want a diverse career. Doing things like working with Clive Owen in Derailed or being in Friends – I couldn’t believe I got in there for the last season, it’s all amazing.

What have been the biggest disappointments?

Every day brings a disappointment in this business. I’ll see Kate Winslet in a role and think: ‘I’d loved to have played that.’ Then you get something like In Treatment. One day you’re ready to jump off the Hollywood sign, the next you’re celebrating. It could easily knock you off your centre.

Where does your resilience come from?

Growing up in Australia. I moved out when I was 16 to do Home And Away and had to pay my own rent and do everything for myself. All of a sudden I was out in the world without my family.

You’re in the Australian TV adaptation of the book The Slap. Your character isn’t portrayed favourably in the book. Are you prepared to be a l hate figure?

I play the mother of the child who is belted at the barbecue and I know exactly who that woman was because, if someone hit my baby, I’d go mental. I brought that to the screen. I got great feedback. I’ve been told people feel her pain. I agreed with everything the character did.

The book was controversial. Are you looking forward to the reception the show will get?

Absolutely. I was with friends over Christmas who’d all read the book and they spent an hour arguing about it. I sat back and thought: ‘This project is going to be great.’

What’s been your most unusual day’s work?

Hanging off Ben Nevis was pretty intense. It took three hours to get to the top and they hung me off the top and I had to dodge rocks.

Do you get to use your championship roller skating skills much?

I helped a friend make a documentary about roller skating recently and I skated in that.

What do you miss about Australia?

Just my family. I spent time before The Slap to get back to doing an Australian accent. They had a dialect coach to help me get it right but it came back after five days. I’ve been living in America for 14 years, most of my adult life, so I needed some help.
